Past Distinguished Service Award Recipients
2010 Recipient Kay M. Creasman, Esq.
VLTA is proud to have Kay M. Creasman, Esq. as the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Service Award. Kay is an underwriter who not only gave the agent the company position, but explained how that position was arrived at. She used her underwriting decisions as teaching opportunities with agents. Kay is the 2003-2004 Past President of VLTA, who came back to serve as the Chairman of the Legislative Committee after her term as President. She is passionate about education and the Association. Kay is a quilter and someone who has cannon balls piled up in her house.
2009 Recipient Alaine Belongia Donovan, Esq.
VLTA is honored to call individuals like this year's Distinguished Service Award recipient, Alaine Donovan, part of the group of people who work hard to help our association grow. Alaine Belongia Donovan is Vice President, Virginia and District of Columbia Counsel for Chicago, Commonwealth Land and Ticor Title Insurance Companies. She has a career of over 33 years in the real estate and title insurance industry.
Ms. Donovan has lectured extensively about various aspects of real property law and title insurance issues, including programs approved for the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Land Title Association, the District of Columbia Land Title Association and the Virginia Continuing Education Board for licensed title insurance agents. She is a member of the Real Property and Probate Sections of both the District of Columbia Bar and the Virginia State Bar. She has served as President of the District of Columbia Land Title Association, and has held various offices of the Virginia Land Title Association. Ms. Donovan was the Education Chair of the VLTA when continuing education for title insurance agents became law. In order to make continuing education courses available on behalf of the VLTA to all licensed title insurance agents throughout the state, she had programs taped in a local television studio. From 1993 to 2009, Ms. Donovan was appointed by the Virginia Commissioner of Insurance to the Virginia Continuing Education Board, most recently serving as Vice Chair.
Ms. Donovan is admitted to the practice of law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in the District of Columbia. She graduated with distinction from George Mason University in 1982, and received her juris doctorate from George Mason University School of Law in 1986.
2008 Recipient Bill Amrhein, Esq.
We are fortunate to have many individuals who go out of their way to help build all aspects of our organization into what it is today. This year's Distinguished Service Award goes to Bill Amrhein; an individual who has worn many hats throughout his career. This year's recipient began a successful twenty year career in private practice before being employed by a national title underwriter. The scope of his responsibilities includes counsel to agents, teacher to staff, and, at times, philosopher. Bill has served on most of the committees, giving guidance and productive input; in addition to working behind the scenes guiding our industry into the future. He has served on our Board and given us tremendous support.
As his peers have said, "understanding, caring, humble, funny and sweet. Always willing to help and answer our never-ending questions. I enjoy learning from him and listening to his stories."
2007 Recipient Sterling H. Moore, Esq.
This year's recipient, Sterling H. Moore, Esq., Underwriter Member, (LandAmerica Financial Group, Inc.) has served VLTA for many years! Sterling has participated on several committees (legislative, technology, education, examiner, etc.) and has provided education and legislative updates numerous times over the years. VLTA has come to depend on his tracking of all pertinent legislative issues for our industry. Sterling has also served as our in-house photographer at conventions and special functions! Sterling's dedication to Virginia Land Title Association has been above and beyond. His volunteer service has been invaluable to our association.
2006 Recipient William Page Johnston
This year’s recipient, William Page Johnston, Underwriter Member, has served VLTA for over 20 years! Bill has served on several committees and the board. He served as President for the 1998-1999 term, and for over 12 years has served as Editor and Chief of the much-praised Examiner.
Bill's leadership has provided the association with a publication that is sought after by Virginia's land title professionals. The Examiner Committee, with Bill's lead, continues to offer our members pertinent industry related content. Bill's volunteer service has been invaluable to our association.
2005 Recipient Carol Butler
This year's recipient, Carol Butler, Associate Member, has done an excellent job! Carol has served on the Education Committee for two years before becoming the Committees' Chair. Under Carol's leadership, the committee has successfully provided VLTA members with pertinent industry related education at both our Fall Seminar and Annual Convention. Carol continues to offer pre-licensing classes for those interested in obtaining a Virginia license. Her volunteer service has been invaluable to our association.
Carol R. Butler is President of The Butler Company which provides consulting and training to the Virginia title insurance industry and real estate law firms. A native of Hampton Roads, Carol has built a statewide network of professionals who often work with her in providing training to her clients.
